Actress Sophia Shinas portrayed Shelly Webster, the fiancée' of Eric Draven, in The Crow. The lovely young actress made her film debut in the feature, which also proved to be a very traumatizing experience, thanks to the untimely death of actor Brandon Lee.
Most of the following excerpts come from the January 1995 edition of "Femme Fatales" magazine.
Making her film debut in The Crow, Shinas was indirectly embroiled in a controversy that skirted commercial consequences. Brandon Lee, as a victim of Detroit's criminal colony, returns from the grave to avenge his fiancée's death. But a non-scripted tragedy proved no less violent; while filming in North Carolina Lee was fatally shot with a gun that was "supposed" to be loaded with blanks. He died on March 31, 1993.
Cast as Shelly Webster -- Lee's slain betrothed -- Shinas' role "was supposed to be much larger. But, due to circumstances, we never got the chance. I was there when it happened. We had been working on the film for about a month before it happened. That night, we were actually going to start working more on our scenes together. They were finishing the more violent scenes. We were going to shoot the scenes where Brandon's character would portray real emotion as opposed to -- bang! Bang! -- shoot em up. It turned out to be the film's last real violent scene, actually. Then the tragedy -- I was emotionally traumatized. I immediately left the set. We were all just stunned, having known Brandon as a wonderful person. Completely professional, a real fun kind of guy. I just became a recluse for the next six months. It taught me to understand and realize my own mortality."
Months after Lee's demise, the supporting cast returned to the studio in an effort to salvage the film; their communal goal was to transform the incomplete product into a testament to the late actor. "Going back was very difficult," recounts Shinas, "—because we really felt his presence." The grim circumstances that dictated the re-editing of the film reduced Shinas' role to flashback scenes.
Since recovering from the emotional scars left by her first cinematic experience Shinas has gone on to appear in Showtime's Red Shoe Diaries "Borders of Salt" episode. Shinas also co-starred with Charlie Sheen in Terminal Velocity and with C. Thomas Howell in Hourglass, a role which proved to be a reminder of her part in The Crow. She was cast as Dora Jenson, who was an enraged woman with designs on revenge on co-star Howell.
Because Dora is skilled in martial arts, Shinas was obligated to tally some experience for the combat scenes. "I had a trainer," she recalls. "Ironically enough, he was Brandon Lee's personal trainer, Michael Vandrell. I trained for about two months. Everyone was so nice, especially since they knew I had been working on The Crow. They were all a little paranoid."
Afterwards Shinas appeared in the new version of The Outer Limits, in an episode entitled "Valerie 23", where she played an android gone bad. She also was to appear in the Jean-Claude Van Damme film, Street Fighter. Unfortunately she was not able to appear in that film due to scheduling conflicts. After that, Shinas was injured in an auto collision and it very nearly ended her career, but Shinas has bounced back nicely, and has since considered cutting a follow up to her album fittingly entitled Sofia Shinas. Her most recent cinematic appearances are in the films Love Her Madly where she played a temptress; Ripper Man, Delimma ( also with C. Thomas Howell ), and Hostile Intent with Rob Lowe.
"What happened on that stage truly gives new meaning to the word tragedy. I really didn't want to go back." -- Sofia Shinas
